Collins Lipzz Hybrid T-192 pickups
A hybrid lipstick style pickup made for Strats and single coil Strat type guitars. Traditional lipstick pickups like the Dan Electro guitars and Silvertones had the wire wound directly onto a bar magnet and stuffed into a chrome lipstick case with no bobbin.
They had a distinct sound and were mid scooped and low ohms 3-4K and were great for blues, surf, clean sounds, rhythm, country picking and jazz but also broke up nicely when driven.
But a traditional lipstick would not fit in a Strat without modification. There have been many mods to install lipsticks and some production models come with them. But the Lipzz T-192 are a hybrid pickup a combination of the Stratocaster and Lipstick pickups. I wound the wire to a bar magnet (like the Electro's) but placed them into a Stratocaster fiberboard format. They have a chrome metal cover that creates a Faraday cage around the coils. The covers are not round like the traditional lipsticks but Strat shaped and look more like a Tele neck than a lipstick but unlike the Tele they are lipstick on the inside. Alnico 5 bar magnets handwound with 42AWG red poly wire in my shop in Texas. 12" of traditional push back wire. Made to hum cancel in the mid position.
- Neck 3.33 K 1.04 Henries
- Mid 3.53 K 1.24 Heneries
- Bridge 4.74 K 2.11 Henries
Note: Do not try to remove covers when mounting pickup they are soldered to ground and removing will damage pickup
- Wound with red .62 top fiberboard and gray .93 bttoms. The magnet has been sealed with my resin formula and taped before winding to stop failure due to shorts. Magnets were handshaped an fitted to the fiberboards in a South/North/South configuration. All pickups were double potted to eliminate microphonics.
These will sing in blues, surf and clean tones.
- Mid scooped and low output (they will not drive an amp like a heavily overwound pickup) they are not designed to. They are underwound to bring out the chime and tones of the lipstick.
- Dripping with tone they will shine in Blues, Surf and Clean tones. Most any genre you put them through the paces with.
Much of your tone is in your hands while no one can promise that you will play like Dale, Wray, Cray or Vaughn by a pickup upgrade you will have the tools at your disposal to take you there
